Vietnam’s Politburo has been announced at the 12th National Party Congress with Nguyen Phu Trong re-elected as Party General Secretary for the 2016-2020 tenure.

Speaking at the press conference right after the wrap-up of the 12th National Party Congress, Trong emphasised the important missions of the new Politburo in taking advantage of new opportunities and address the challenges in the context of continuing turbulences of the global economies and Vietnam’s implementation of new free trade agreements.

“The immediate goal as set out in the 12th National Party Congress’ Resolution is to turn Vietnam a modern industrialised nation and the long-term goal is to make Vietnam more prosperous and democratic,” Trong said.

“One of our responsibilities are to continue strengthening and building a pure Party, and bolstering the fight against corruption, wastefulness and bureaucracy,” he added.

Vietnam's new Politburo comprises 19 members with three female members and the youngest member aged 46.
