To host the event, Quang Nam will organise almost 40 unique activities from now until November, mainly in the province itself. There will also be eight scientific forums, conferences, and seminars on biodiversity, 10 activities to raise awareness, and a series of activities related to planting trees.

The event will also see scientific talks on wildlife conservation and biodiversity restoration; a scientific conference on biodiversity research in coastal marine areas; workshops on improving operational efficiency and management of Cu Lao Cham-Hoi An Biosphere Reserve; and a symposium on carbon storage.

Le Thuy Trinh, deputy director of Quang Nam Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that National Biodiversity Restoration Year 2024 was an environmental event of international scale, contributing to raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation at all levels.

“At the same time, it solidifies the viewpoint of not sacrificing the environment for the sake of economic development, and it is necessary to develop the economy with green thinking, circularity, and a harmonious balance between environmental protection and economic development according to the content of provincial planning,” Trinh said.

In addition, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will organise three activities in Quang Nam: a ceremony in response to International Day of Biodiversity in May and for International Day of Biosphere Reserves in November, and a conference summarising the management of special-use forests and sharing management experiences between national parks and protected areas, also in November.

The overall event will help implement the national strategy on biodiversity to 2030, and is associated with participating in the United Nations’ Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. The event also contributes to implementing Vietnam’s international commitments in 2022, which affirmed that Vietnam continues to actively participate in efforts to preserve global biodiversity.

Quang Nam aims to protect, promote, and sustainably use national and international natural ecosystems, including national parks, natural reserves, species, habitat conservation areas, cultural and historical relics, special-use forests, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and more besides.

The province has already established a new grey-shanked douc langur habitat conservation area, the Lim Xanh nature reserve, the Chien Thang landscape protection area, the Thu Bon River lower wetland conservation area; and the Tam Hai Marine protected area.

Chairman of Quang Nam People’s Committee Le Tri Thanh said that maintaining, protecting, and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity was of great significance not only for the country but the whole world.

“Restoring biodiversity associated with protecting the ecological environment is essential, so we should not focus too much on socioeconomic development without paying attention to restoring and preserving the biodiversity of natural ecosystems. Quang Nam province persistently pursues a green growth strategy for inclusive and sustainable development,” he said.
