A serious accident between two passenger buses killed two people, a husband and wife, and wounded 22 others on Monday in Vinh Phuc Province in northern Vietnam.

At around 3:25 pm, the Trung Kien passenger bus was traveling on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway when it was rear-ended by another passenger bus from Bao Yen bus lines in the area of Lap Thach District.

Two passengers, a married couple sitting on the front seats of the Bao Yen passenger bus, were killed instantly in the collision while 22 others were injured, of which five were serious.

The victims were admitted to Vinh Phuc General Hospital.

Initial investigations show that the accident occurred after a flat tire caused the driver of the Bao Yen bus to lose control, according to a statement made by the Vietnam Expressway Corporation.

Police in Lap Thach have requested identification of the victims and will carry out a thorough probe to determine the cause of the accident, as well as impose punishment upon individuals or organizations responsible.

Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung was dispatched to the scene to coordinate with authorities in Vinh Phuc, as ordered by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Deputy PM Phuc also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and injured and urged provincial health care facilities to mobilize all resources to treat the victims, minimizing the number of casualties.

The official called on agencies to carry out an inspection of the business conditions of both Bao Yen and Trung Kien bus lines, and strictly penalize any violations.

The Vietnam Expressway Corporation has also been requested to examine and fix any substandard infrastructure on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway to ensure traffic safety.
