Japanese household spending edged down 0.4 per cent in October from a year earlier, falling for the eighth consecutive month since the March earthquake and tsunami, the government said Tuesday.

Average monthly spending, a key indicator of private consumption, stood at 285,605 yen ($3,660), down 0.4 per cent from a year earlier in real terms, the internal affairs ministry said.

The drop was smaller than a year-on-year fall of 1.9 per cent registered in September. Economists had expected a drop of 1.5 per cent on average for October.
