APEC senior officials to decide 2017 priorities by March 3

The meetings will be attended by 1,500 delegates from 21 member economies of the APEC, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Council, the APEC Business Consultation Council, and some international and regional organisations along with business representatives.

56 meetings and workshops will be held, besides dialogues of 38 APEC committees and working groups across many fields like trade and investment liberalisation, business facilitation, natural disaster response, human resource development, education, facilitation of travel for business, ocean and fishing, e-commerce and services.

Under the theme “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future,” delegates will discuss and reach agreement on priorities of the 2017 APEC Year and their contents. The priorities are going to cover the following issues: promoting sustainable, inclusive and innovative growth, regional economic connectivity, and the competitiveness of small-and medium-sized enterprises and microenterprises in the digital era, as well as food security, sustainable agriculture, and climate adaptation are also on the agenda of the meetings.

The delegates will also decide the priorities for the four committees on commerce, investment, economy, economic-technical cooperation, budget and management and for other working groups of APEC. They will outline orientations for APEC activities this year.

As chairman of APEC Senior Officials’ Meetings in 2017, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son will preside over the SOM1 and the Chairman’s Friends Meeting on connectivity.

Vietnam’s 13 ministries and agencies will preside over or assume chairmanship and vice chairmanship of committees and working groups of APEC.

Specifically, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will preside over the Budget and Management Committee and the Automotive Dialogue. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will preside over the Policy Support Unit. The Ministry of Finance will preside over the Sub-Committee on Customs Procedures. The Ministry of Science and Technology will preside over the Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance and the Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment will preside over the Human Resource Development Working Group and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will preside over the Policy Partnership on Food Security.

On the occasion, the APEC Finance and Central Bank Deputies’ Meeting will also be held in Nha Trang, chaired by the Ministry of Finance.
