Vietnamese iPhone users to take Apple to court

The court case will be over Apple intentionally slowing down older iPhone models

On January 10, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court City received a petition from two lawyer—Nguyen Ngoc Hung and Tran Manh Tung from Connecting Lawyer Office—to sue Apple after the company was found to intentionally slow down older iPhones via updates, forcing users to replace their batteries or purchase new models.

The two lawyers stated that they decided to sue Apple on behalf of their customers. Via this lawsuit, the two lawyers want to raise awareness among Vietnamese customers that their rights are being violated. Besides, the lawyers asked Apple to show responsibility to all iPhone users in Vietnam.

As to the specific compensation, the lawyers want Apple to pay Vietnamese iPhone users, but have no specific data clarifying the damage Apple caused to Vietnamese customers and so cannot name an exact figure. They will clarify their demands in the coming time.

According to the lawyers, Apple earns over $1 billion in revenue each year from Vietnam alone, yet customers have not received support from Apple in this incident.

“Apple’s after-sale policy in Vietnam has not been nearly as good as the policies of other brands. It is also not the first time that Apple issues unsatisfactory solutions for Vietnamese customers,” the lawyers added.

In late 2017, Apple received massive complaints from iPhone users all over the world after it was revealed that it intentionally slows down older iPhones.

Before these accusations, the company admitted slowing down the iPhone 6, 6S, 7, and SE, but said it was part of a power management feature meant to prevent older batteries from shutting down suddenly.

Apple also apologised to customers and offered cheaper battery replacements to make up for it. However, it has yet to mention specific compensation via cash for customers all over the world.

Customers were not satisfied with Apple’s explanation, and as a result, the iPhone manufacturer is facing a series of lawsuits from customer groups from the US, South Korea, France, Israel, and now Vietnam.

According to the Vietnamese lawyers, Apple’s offer of cheaper battery replacement is just another way to earn money, because the discount selling price is still too high.
