Ford Vietnam on June 29 started the 9th year of the global programme, Driving Skills for Life.

In 2016 the programme is going to add contents related to driving on the highway, or driving on a complicated road or in fog. Trainers at driving instruction centres continue to be a priority of the programme. But besides those, Ford is also bringing the programme, for free, to taxi, coach and truck drivers through transport associations and the local offices of Traffic Safety.

After eight years the Driving Skills for Life programme, jointly organised by Ford and the National Traffic Safety Committee (NSFC) and the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIPF), has trained a total 10,000 drivers in 14 cities and provinces of the country. Ford expects to train 1,500 drivers for free this year and bring the cumulative total to 11,500 by the end of 2016.

On this occasion, the NSFC and Ford signed the agreement to jointly teach safe driving skills to students in the 2016-2020 period. Accordingly, Ford Vietnam is going to pay for classes on traffic safety for students from five universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in 2016.

The classes are going to teach students the basic knowledge of traffic safety and include activities that raise awareness of traffic safety among young people, warning them of the danger of using phones when driving and driving under the influence. The network of schools joining in the programme is going to be expanded in the following years.

Khuat Viet Hung, deputy president of the NSFC, said that the committee appreciated the effort of companies including Ford Vietnam in raising awareness of traffic safety among people. “We believe that with these efforts Vietnam is going to achieve the target of decreasing the number of traffic accident victims by half in 2020 from now,” he said.

“Besides bringing to Vietnamese customers safe and quality products, Ford wants to improve the driving skills of people. We believe the best way to decrease traffic accidents is through education. We hope the programme is going to help make Vietnamese roads safer,” said Pham Van Dung, CEO of Ford Vietnam.

On the occasion the Ford Foundation contributed VND220 million ($10,000) to the NSFC’s programme to support victims and families of victims of traffic accidents.
