Vietnamese agricultural products made their debut on Chinese e-commerce and social media platforms such as Mr Asean Mall, TikTok, Kuaishou, Taobao, JD.com, and Xiaohongshu.

A launch ceremony was held on November 20, and was jointly organised by the Agricultural Trade Promotion Centre and the Department of Quality, Processing, and Market Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The products are promoted using a 'product-seeking-consumer' model through short videos and livestreaming to help suppliers sell directly to Chinese consumers and introduce brand products to the market.

To join the marketplace, businesses must obtain a registration code in China and undergo certification approval. They will then receive training in video production, 'key opinion leader' marketing, packaging, market trends, and guidance on using warehouse management systems.

According to nld.com.vn, Nguyen Minh Tien, director of the Agricultural Trade Promotion Centre, said, "Online exporting to Chinese e-commerce and social media platforms will help Vietnamese agricultural products penetrate deeper into the Chinese market."

Tien also recommended that businesses invest more in product design and packaging. Previously, when Vietnamese businesses exported agricultural products to China through distributors or importers, these partners typically handled packaging to suit local preferences.

"When connected to e-commerce platforms, Vietnamese agricultural products can directly access Chinese consumers. Vietnamese businesses will reduce marketing and promotional costs and alleviate transportation expense concerns," said Nguyen Thanh Binh, chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit)

According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary general of Vinafruit, introducing Vietnamese agricultural products on Chinese e-commerce and social media platforms represents a successful push in international cooperation. "Vietnamese agricultural products have the full potential to advance in the international market, but organisations should collaborate with local businesses on mutually beneficial terms, understanding the market and finding appropriate business strategies," he said.

China is Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable export market. Fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market are projected to reach between $4.5 and $5 billion in 2024. Durian exports alone are estimated to have exceeded $2.5 billion by the end of September, with potential to reach over $3 billion by year-end.

With current growth trends and increasing consumption demand in the Chinese market, industry experts have predicted that Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have the potential to reach $10 billion in exports in the near future.
