Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp. said Thursday manufacturing operations had resumed at nine out of 10 sites hit by the March 11 earthquake-tsunami and power outages.

Operations at 10 Sony sites and facilities were suspended last month due to damage caused by the disasters and electricity shortages after a nuclear power plant was crippled by the quake and giant wave.

"As of today, manufacturing operations at nine of these 10 sites have resumed or partially resumed," Sony said in a statement.

The 10th factory in tsunami-hit Miyagi prefecture, which produces Blu-Ray discs, is expected to resume manufacturing optical discs around the end of May, with magnetic tape manufacturing due to resume around the end of July.

Sony said it has been adjusting production levels at domestic and overseas sites that were not directly affected by the disasters to cope with fluctuations in supplies of materials and components.
