PSG avoid French Cup slip-up

Paris Saint Germain avoided a potential French Cup banana skin on Sunday after the holders edged out a determined fifth-tier side Agen 3-2 to reach the last 16.

First division sides have been falling in numbers with half eliminated prior to the current round and only seven now remain after Nice won a top flight meeting with Lyon 1-0 after extra-time, Francois Clerc netting.

League leaders Lille survived to book an encounter with second division Nantes - after just squeezing out amateur outfit Wasquehal 1-0, Brazilian Tulio de Melo on target.

That match pitted two brothers against one another with Mathieu Debuchy of Lille putting one over elder sibling Gregoire.

Agen, seeking to emulate fellow amateurs Chambery's shock wins over Monaco and now Brest, generally gave as good as they got against PSG, who next will face fourth tier Martigues.

But a 13th-minute goal from Mathieu Bodmer settled the visitors and although Mamoudou Daffe levelled four minutes before the break Peguy Luyindula put the professionals ahead within two minutes of the restart.

For Luyindula, formerly with Lyon and Marseille and a Cup winner with Strasbourg a decade ago, the goal was some vindication after he was left out of last week's League Cup loss to Montpellier.

Just three minutes later, Guillaume Hoarau scored what proved the clincher before the hosts, roared on by a 12,000 crowd, pulled back a consolation through Anthony Vandersnick with 20 minutes remaining.

PSG are looking to lift the trophy for the ninth time, which would leave them just one short of Marseille's record.

The lowest level side remaining, sixth-tier Vaulx-en-Velin, bowed 2-0 to two-time winners Rennes, who advanced to a home match with Reims with goals from Alexander Tettey and Yacine Brahimi.

Also through Sunday were Metz, who won an all-second division match at Sedan by the only goal.

Fifth-tier Chambery remained the toast of the tournament after Saturday's win over Brest on penalties followed a similar shootout win over Monaco in the previous round.

The tiny outfit's reward is a home encounter with first division Sochaux.

Fellow amateurs Drancy are also through, thanking an injury-time goal from Karim Herouat as they saw off second division Boulogne to book a meeting at home to Nice.

Bordeaux became the 12th first division side to exit the tournament after they went down at second division Angers to a second-half goal from Sebastien Renouard.

"This is my biggest disappointment in 17 years," said Bordeaux coach Jean Tigana, who led Monaco to the French title before a spell with Fulham in England.

At Chambery, the 3,500 fans who packed into the Stade Municipal in the Alpine town saw a dramatic match as former Saint Etienne striker Malik Faye, on as a substitute, levelled at the death after Brest substitute Bruno Grougi had given the professionals the lead.

Just as against Monaco, Remy Sahinovic smacked in the decisive kick.
