Vietnam’s President Nguyen Minh Triet left for Japan to attend the 18th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting in Yokohama, Japan today.

The president will attend private meetings with other APEC leaders on themes ‘Maintaining regional growth and prosperity’ and ‘Bogor goals and APEC future’ and partake in dialogues with representatives from APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and a summit of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME Summit)

APEC 18’s targets are to boost economic growth towards a prosperous, dynamic and harmonious community in Asia-Pacific by promoting the liberalisation of trade and investment, regional economic integration and economic and technical cooperation, and a favourable and sustainable business environment.

Triet’s attendance will help raise Vietnam’s status in the international arena, enhance its role in APEC and its voice on the meeting’s important contents, particularly the growth strategy to promote regional economic linkage and devise APEC development orientations.

APEC 18 on the theme “Change and Action” attracts leaders from 21 member economies, including nine G-20 members. APEC accounts for 52 per cent of the world’s territories, 59 per cent of global population, 50 per cent of global gross domestic product and 57 per cent of international trade.
