Earlier, the VFF's Disciplinary Committee suspended all the football-related activities of these players to make way for the investigation to be conducted by the police.

The nine footballers admitted that they had bet on their match against Malaysia's Kelantan FA at the 2014 AFC Cup on March 18.

Officials said the players pocketed VND800 million ($38,000) from their winnings.

On August 25, the People's Court in Ninh Binh province sentenced ring-leader Tran Manh Dung to 30 months in jail for gambling. Eight others received suspended sentences ranging from 24 to 27 months.
