Mekong Delta Cycling Tournament opens

More than 90 cyclists from 19 strong teams across the country are taking part in the Mekong Delta Cycling Tournament 2012, which officially began in Ho Chi Minh City on August 13.

The riders are competing in nine stages covering more than 1,000km through 13 Mekong Delta cities and provinces including An Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, and Dong Thap.

The race began with the 68km first stage from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre province yesterday and will conclude in Vi Thanh city in Hau Giang province on August 20.

The tournament’s team and individual event winners will receive total cash prizes of more than VND250 million (US$12,000).

The annual event is being held jointly by the Vietnam Sports Bicycle and Motorbike Association and the Hau Giang provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
