The Vietnam-Sweden Business Forum in Stockholm

This is part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two sides at the Vietnam-Sweden Business Forum held on May 27 on the occasion of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s visit to Stockholm.

The MoU was one of many others signed at the event. Ericsson was one of the Swedish brand names attending the event, next to ABB, Ericsson, Volvo, and Electrolux.

Vietnam’s cities and provinces are ramping up efforts with new action plans to realise the smart city dream. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang have so far announced new action plans for this.

Together with the three cities, some others like Bac Ninh and Binh Duong have also built their own smart city development plans. Currently, more than 30 smart city models are being deployed by VNPT and Viettel, in combination with Microsoft, Fujitsu, and IBM.

According to Vu Tien Loc, president of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to successfully develop a smart city, cities and provinces should look for reliable partners to ensure network security and project feasibility. Thus, they should strike up partnerships with countries which have strong expertise in the field, with Sweden, the US, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan being the top suggestions.

In this light, international tech giants such as Ericsson are moving faster with new ambitious business plans. In mid-April, Ericsson announced the Internet of Things Innovation Hub in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Women in ICT Internship programme the corporation has forged with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

In early May, telecom giant Viettel and Ericsson successfully conducted the first call using fifth generation (5G) technology in Vietnam, making the country as one of the earliest countries to successfully test a 5G network, after the US, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.

Ericsson has accompanied Viettel in the experimental implementation of 5G. Viettel and Ericsson acknowledged the importance of using 5G in applying and improving the benefits of Industry 4.0.

As planned, Vietnam will bring 5G into commercial operation in 2020 and will be one of the first countries to deploy the latest network. One of the applications in the first phase of 5G is smart factories. Viettel and other network providers must experiment to cover 5G in all hi-tech zones, national innovation centres, and smart factories by 2020.
