Can Tho to open new domestic and international routes

At a meeting on February 22 the Can Tho People’s Committee stated that the city will open new domestic and international routes to motivate socioeconomic development in the province.

The new routes include four domestic routes from Vietjet Air: Can Tho-Haiphong (one flight a day), Can Tho-Vinh (three flights a week), Can Tho-Da Lat (four flights a week), Can Tho-Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa province (four flights a week). Two new international routes will be opened by low-cost Malaysian airline Air Asia, including Can Tho-Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (four flights a week) and Can Tho-Bangkok, Thailand (three flights a week).

The new player, Bamboo Airways also expects to open a Can Tho-Hanoi flight (one flight a week) in March 2019.

Can Tho International Airport currently has several Vietnam Airlines flights at the moment, linking the location with Hanoi and Danang, while Vietjet also flies to Hanoi and Vasco flies to Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

According to the Can Tho Department of Transport, during 2018 Can Tho International Airport received over 6,400 flights.

At the meeting, Le Tien Dung, director of the Can Tho Department of Transport, said that Can Tho International Airport serves the whole Mekong Delta region. From 2011, the Ministry of Transport was interested in promoting the opening of new routes, however, no new routes have been opened yet.

Can Tho International Airport opened in 2011 with the capacity of three million passengers per year. In order to maintain and enable the full utilisation of the airport, representatives of four and five-star hotels at the meeting also suggested diversifying tourism products to attract visitors.

Director of Can Tho International Airport Pham Thanh Tam said that in 2018 the number of passengers passing through the airport was 815,000, an increase of 20 per cent compared to 2017 and reached 40 per cent of design capacity. The airport has been upgraded to accommodate nine aircraft in its parking lot instead of the previous seven, in order to meet future development needs, according to newswire bnews.vn.
