Vietnam gymnastic women shine in SEA Games

Phan Thi Ha Thanh of Vietnam won a gold medal in the women’s all round gymnastics in the 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Palembang, the Indonesian province of Sumatra on Monday.

She earned 53.27 points to clinch the title. Her countrywoman Do Thi Ngan Thuong came second with 47.90 points to secure a silver.

The bronze medalist in the category was Singapore’s Lim Heem Wei. In the men’s all round gymnastics, Vietnamese athletes took a silver and a bronze on the same day.

In mid-October, Ha Thanh became the first Vietnamese woman to earn a direct ticket to the Olympic Games after she won the country’s first world-class gymnastics medal in Japan. The performance secured her a berth in the 2012 London Olympics.

SEA Games medal updates

Vietnam earned 27 golds by 11 pm Monday to rank third in the medals table. Hosts Indonesia kept their comfortable lead at the top of tally table with 60 golds.

Achieving 35 golds, Thailand held steady in second place. Singapore came four after clinching 19 golds.
