Alstom Power has supplied heavy-duty equipment for leading Vietnam hydropower projects
The deal will see it provide electro-mechanical equipment for the 1,200 megawatt Lai Chau hydropower plant.
This contract was reached shortly after Alstom and its partners witnessed the official inauguration of South East Asia’s biggest hydropower plant in Son La province.
The scope of the contract includes the delivery, supervision of erection, testing and commissioning of three Francis 400MW turbine and generator sets as well as mechanical and electrical auxiliaries.
The equipment will be manufactured at Alstom’s hydropower industrial facility in Tianjin in China.
The facility is Alstom’s largest hydropower manufacturing base and a leading supplier of equipment in China and across Asia, a region claiming the biggest opportunities for hydro power infrastructure development.
Construction of the Lai Chau hydro power plant began in January 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2017.
The plant will be the third largest hydro plant in Vietnam, generating more than 4.7 billion kWh every year to the national grid.
The project will also improve water supply for downstream areas, especially in the dry season, as well as river navigation and irrigation for agriculture, among other socio-economic factors in Lai Chau province.
“This success further reinforces our already long and successful partnership with EVN,” said Jérôme Pécresse, president of Alstom Renewable Power.
“Alstom is pleased to contribute to Vietnam’s strong socio-economic development by meeting significant growth in energy demands,” he added.
Present in Vietnam for more than 20 years, Alstom has been playing a significant role in the Vietnamese power generation development plan. Last year the group won contract awards for the 520MW Hoi Quang and 156MW Song Bung 4 hydro power plants and announced the successful grid synchronisation of the sixth and last turbine and generator set of the 2,400MW Son La power plant.
Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure, priding itself on innovative and environmentally sound technologies. It has built the fastest train and the highest capacity automated metro in the world, provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, nuclear, gas, coal and wind, and it offers a wide range of solutions for power transmission, with a focus on smart grids. The group had sales of €20 billion and booked close to €22 billion in orders in 2011 and 2012.
