Vina Korea has been contributing to Vinh Phuc Provincial Social Sponsor Fund for more than a decade as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) campaign.
Each month, the company donates VND60 million ($2,900) through the fund to assist unfortunate children who face special hardships in the province, helping them to integrate into the society.
And starting in 2011, Vina Korea has contributed VND90 million ($4,300) into a cow raising project to help scores of provincial residents earn stable incomes to improve their living conditions.
A project beneficiary, Khuat Van Thang in Vinh Tuong district, used the money he got from the project to buy a pair of cattle one year ago. His family now enjoys a stable income from these cattle.
“These cattle had produced us a calf,” Thang said. “Our good fortune has since we just escaped from the poor household status.”
Last year Vina Korea scaled up support to needy households by financing the construction of gratitude houses in cooperation with a fund providing aids to the handicapped and orphans in Vinh Phuc province.
Nguyen Van Tuan, a Song Lo district resident, was the first recipient getting VND100 million ($4,800) from the project to build a new home. His family’s greatest concern, however, is to heal the critical illness of their five-year old son who weighs less than 10 kilograms as a result of a special type of dermatitis that creates daily suffering.
Tuan had to quit job as a plastic plant worker to take care of his family, particularly the unhealthy son. His son’s ever-growing needs for treatment have driven Tuan’s family into a corner.
Getting to know Tuan’s situation, Vina Korea’s general director Lee Jae Wan expressed the company’s commitment to bolstering support to unfortunate families like Tuan’s in the upcoming period.
“The time when companies just took care of their own interests is over,” Lee said. “We are happy handling community support activities which are part in our long-term investment trajectory in Vietnam.”
Vina Korea Ltd. also constantly provides vocational training courses to improve its labourers’ skills.
According to the company’s trade union chairman Phung Van Binh, the labourers’ proposals are mostly handled with discretion by the management to ensure they get satisfactory responses in return.
The labourers benefit from a periodical pay hike in October every year and often get New Year bonus tantamount to one-month salary at least. The labourers also take chance to join courses where they are trained in soft skills, including effective cost and time management skills.
“The prime benefits of these courses were they made us more confident when communicating with others,” said Hoang Thi Minh Hai, a Vina Korea worker.
“Besides, we were taught how to manage our time and costs effectively to have a better family life.”
Vina Korea Limited specialises in making quality knitwear for export to the US, Japan, Canada and the EU. The company employs more than 3,500 labourers with the monthly income averaging VND2.6 million ($125) per worker. For its active contribution to the community development, the company received awards conferring on businesses with excellent performance by the Vinh Phuc Provincial People’s Council and it was named among businesses excellently performing social insurance policies by the Vietnam Social Security. |
