VNG has been running a social network of 40 million accounts on Zalo.vn and Zalo.me without a permit |
Nguyen Duc Tho, chief inspector of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications, said that the request was lodged because these two domains have been providing social networking services in Vietnam without a license, according to Vneconomy.vn.
Tho also added that 10 days before issuing the request, the Department of Information and Communications had issued a warning to VNG.
Also, according to Tho, in 2018 the Inspectorate of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City fined Zalo. "We have given a lot of time to Zalo to apply for a license in accordance with the law, but they have not complied.”
Zalo is a social network with over 40 million users nationwide, almost half of the Vietnamese population.
Accordingly, the two Zalo domains were made inaccessible and revoked on July 19.
Meanwhile, Tran Minh Tan, director of Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), the agency managing national domains, said that until July 18, the centre has not received any documents from the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City.
And whether to revoke or not, VNNIC must first receive and consider the contents on the document then make a decision.
