TNK Vietnam and the AAR consortium last week signed a sponsorship agreement with Hanoi University of Mining and Geology to provide VND418 million ($19,900) to students for scientific research.

The project aims to  build capability for Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) students from their third year upwards.  Conducting scientific research is expected to enrich their skills in working as a team and to promote new ideas and initiatives together.

“We hope that our support will help the students advance in conducting scientific research, presentation skills, and working in teams. By implementing this project, we mean to make contributions to education and training in mining and geology, and indirectly contribute to the development of the petroleum industry of Vietnam,” said TNK Vietnam’s general director Hugh McIntosh.

Tran Dinh Kien, rector of the HUMG, said that the university’s management board has a long-term interest in promoting scientific research activities, especially for students.

“This sponsorship will be a great encouragement for teachers and students of the university to target higher innovations in scientific researches,” Kien said.

Sponsoring students to do scientific research is one of TNK Vietnam’s four community investment projects being implemented this year with a total fund of VND2.1 billion ($100,000) and focusing on healthcare and education and training.

The three other projects included the funding heart surgeries for underprivileged patients, granting “One and One” scholarships to outstanding and poor students, and providing traffic safety education and helmets for school children in Ho Chi Minh City. Licenced to operate in Vietnam in October 2011, TNK Vietnam is operating gas and condensate production project from Block 06.1, consisting of Lan Tay and Lan Do fields, and supplies about 22 per cent of Vietnam’s total electricity generation.

In addition to building a sustainable business, the company has actively worked with local governments and organisations to implement social responsibility activities in support of local communities’ development. TNK Vietnam, which is also involved in oil and gas exploration and production, entered Vietnam through the acquisition of BP’s upstream assets in October, 2011.

Production commenced in November 2002 from Lan Tay field and October 2012 from Lan Do
field. Block 06.1 has safely and reliably supplied more than 35 billion cubic metres of gas to fuel Vietnam’s economic development.

Nam Con Son Pipeline, of which TNK Vietnam holds 32.7 per cent of equities, processed and transported 5.85 billion cubic metres of gas and 1.98 million barrels of condensate for Blocks 06.1, 11.2 and 12W in 2011.
