The Executive Board of Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam led by its CEO Nirukt Sapru visited Nguyen Khuyen secondary school in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province, on February 25 as part of a wider programme to provide assistance to the school and its students following recent torrential flooding in the area.

On the occasion, the bank, in collaboration with Fred Hollows Foundation, had organised eye screening for more than 250 pupils and provided spectacles to students with poor eyesight.

Additionally, the bank’s leadership donated 10 computers and notebooks to the school.

The leaders also volunteered to be teachers for the day, giving English classes and participating in recreational activities with the students.

Earlier this year, Standard Chartered committed $25,000 to help construct a three-storey building consisting of four function rooms for the school.

This building, which will be large enough to hold several hundred people, will also serve as an evacuation shelter for villagers during times of disaster.

Although Nguyen Khuyen School has been operating for 13 years, it has had to shut repeatedly because of damage from frequent flooding and typhoons.

These disruptions have prevented the children from attending school, which has hampered their education.

The new building will help alleviate the issue by providing teachers and pupils with proper, weather resistant rooms as well as recreation facilities.

Construction of the new building will begin in the second quarter of this year. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2015.

Standard Chartered is a leading international banking group.

In Vietnam, the group’s history can be traced back to 1904 when the bank opened its first branch in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City).

Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam, with three branches employing nearly 700 staff, now provides a full suite of wholesale banking products and services to corporate clients and financial institutions in parallel to consumer banking to serve individuals and small and medium enterprises.

The bank also plays an active role in the Vietnamese community through many social and charitable activities.
