While the five-star American International Hospital in Hanoi remains a derelict construction site after a 17-year delay, Ho Chi Minh City seems to be a much more attractive venue for medical services, with a range of advanced hospitals in the pipeline.

The US-based Quantus Corporation and Allied Telesis KK last week came to an agreement to build a $500 million state-of-the-art hospital at the Saigon Hi-Tech Park in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 9.

With completion expected in 2018, the facility will be the most modern hospital in the southern economic hub of the country, home to over eight million citizens, including nearly 100,000 expats.

According to Alex Park, vice chairman and general counsel of Quantus, the high-tech hospital aims to provide medical services matching those in Singapore, Seoul, and Tokyo. It is also expected to attract patients from other countries and bring between $500 million and $1 billion into Vietnam.

Quantus will work with Allied Telesis KK in the application of information technology in healthcare services, Stanford Hospital for doctor training and exchange programmes, and the University of California for research fellowship programmes through its life sciences institute. The project will follow the model of the renowned Osaka University Hospital.

Recently, My My Trading Company, a member of Tien Phuoc Real Estate JSC, broke ground on the American International Hospital (AIH) – the first of its kind in Vietnam. Located in Ho Chi Minh City’s budding District 2, AIH is expected to be up and running in March 2018.

Equipped with advanced technology and facilities, the hospital will be staffed by a team of doctors trained in the US. “AIH will be set up according to US standards established by the healthcare accreditation organisation Joint Commission International,” said Nguyen Ngoc Tien, doctor-in-chief at AIH.

Tien said that the healthcare sector in Vietnam is in very high demand, especially for high quality and international standard services.

Ho Chi Minh City is also home to other international hospitals including the Hoa Lam Shangrila Hospital, FV Hospital, Vimec and some other private international clinics. While the investment into five-star hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City gathers speed, projects like the Hanoi American Hospital in the capital, invested in by US-based Keystone Global Group, lie neglected due to diverse reasons.

According to the Ministry of Health, Vietnamese spend $1.5-2 billion a year on healthcare services in foreign countries. With the participation of the new international-standard hospitals in the market, it is hoped the majority of this expense can be kept inside the country.
