Founded in the UK in 1976 by Dame Anita Roddick, The Body Shop has spread throughout the world and today there are over 2,500 stores in more than 60 countries all stocking The Body Shop’s trademark products, which are produced “animal cruelty-free” and contain fairly-traded natural ingredients.

This extraordinary journey began with the simple idea that “businesses have the power to do good”, which led to the creation of the original, and ethical cosmetics company.
Today, The Body Shop philosophy, “Nature’s Way to Beautiful”, and passion continue to drive everything the brand does. “We believe there is only one way to beautiful: Nature’s way,” says Dame Anita Roddick. “We’ve believed this for years and still do. We constantly seek out wonderful natural ingredients from all four corners of the globe, and we bring you products bursting with effectiveness to enhance your natural beauty and express your unique personality. And whilst we’re doing this, we always strive to protect this beautiful planet and the people who depend on it. We don’t do this because it’s fashionable. We do this because, to us, it’s the only way.”

The Body Shop believes beauty is a feeling, a natural way of being, where character, self-esteem and humour are freely expressed and celebrated. That’s the soul of beauty. It’s not just about looking beautiful. It’s about exuding a vibrant attitude to life. The brand’s commitment to seeking and sustaining natural materials and ingredients, and using all the planet’s resources wisely, governs this UK brand’s entire approach to business.

The Body Shop was one of the first to make a stand against animal testing in the cosmetics industry. Not only that, people are at the heart and soul of the business, striving to treat all people in a fair and open fashion, to respect and value their integrity. Well-known for its ethical stance, The Body Shop is a unique cosmetics and toiletry brand that has never been afraid to champion the vulnerable and the disadvantaged, and for more than 30 years now; continues to campaign for social justice and human rights. It takes enormous pride in its Community  Fair Trade programme, not just for being the first to bring fair trade to the industry, but because of the real difference it makes to the lives of the farmers, producers and their communities.

The Body Shop International launched its Community Fair Trade programme in 1987, becoming the first cosmetics and toiletries company in the world to introduce fair trade into the beauty industry. Today, more than 20 years later, The Body Shop remains unrivalled, boasting the largest fair trade programme in cosmetics and toiletries.

Community Fair Trade is neither charity, nor aid. The Body Shop relationships with its suppliers are commercially viable and sustainable. By trading fairly, the company guarantees its suppliers a fair price for their great natural ingredients, accessories and gifts, giving them access to a global market that would have otherwise been out of reach.

Today, over 1,000 products contain Community Fair Trade ingredients, accessories and gifts. Working with suppliers in over 30 countries around the world, we trade with disadvantaged and often marginalised communities from Brazil to Zambia. By creating sustainable business partnerships, The Body Shop provides an essential income to more than 5,000 people and their families, providing them with opportunities to improve their livelihoods, to send their children to school and to help their villages develop basic infrastructure and medical facilities.

Customers get high quality products and the opportunity to demonstrate their ethical purchasing power; a community benefits from fair trade; and The Body Shop continues its commitment to offering fantastic products in a socially responsible way.
