On the occasion of its 50th anniversary this year, leading international self-service wholesaler Metro Cash & Carry last week launched METRO Community Stars 2014 award, seeking to honour independent entrepreneurs whose outstanding social and ecological commitment contributes to the quality of life in their community and acknowledge how important small businesses are for local integration.

Accordingly, from April 28 to June 22, all self-employed entrepreneurs can apply online at www.metro.com.vn  – including mobile devices – or at any METRO wholesale store.

All they need to do is submit a short portrait that describes their social or ecological commitment. All submissions will be presented both on the METRO Cash & Carry website and the associated Facebook page.

There contestants for the title of “METRO Community Stars 2014” can also upload photos and videos to attract votes. All visitors to the website have until June 22 to select the best contributions.

“With the METRO Community Stars 2014 award we are putting the spotlight on people who usually does not get the recognition that big companies enjoy. But these business owners make a lasting contribution to integration in the community as entrepreneurs and role models,” said Philippe Bacac, managing director at METRO Cash & Carry Vietnam.

Bacac also said small businesses such as restaurants, kiosks, cafés or bistros were often an important focal point in the community, so the company wanted to involve the public in the selection of the winners because social commitment by the businesses has primarily benefitted the local people.

“The better the participants are connected with their community, the higher their chances of winning,” he noted.

The “METRO Community Stars 2014” award underpins METRO Cash & Carry’s aspiration to boost the economic success of independent entrepreneurs in the long run.

“For us, long-term, trust-based customer relationships are the key to success, and this is also the core message of our brand message “YOU & METRO,” explains Nguyen Thanh Tam, Brand & Communications manager.

“Only those who invest ambition, creativity, tenacity and unwavering passion in their business and meeting the needs of their customers can grow in the long term,” Tam said.

The shortlisted participants with the most votes will be assessed again by an independent jury before the 15 winners are ultimately announced in August.
