Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung is urging the public to buckle up and wear helmets on Vietnam’s dangerous roads.

Last week he sent official dispatch 1317/CD-TTg, requesting all branches, ministries, agencies and local authorities to publicise helmet-wearing regulations and promote traffic safety awareness.
Dung said state-employed and Party members must set a positive example to society.
The Ministry of Police has been assigned to increase patrols and inspections of all drivers who violate the law.
Dung said all students and high school pupils who are illegally driving motorbikes will now be fined. One week has passed since the government resolution forcing all motorcycle drivers to wear helmets on national highways came into force and roads around the country have seen a higher percentage of people using headgear.
On national expressways, almost all drivers have obeyed the regulation. In the inner city, where the regulation will come into force from mid-December, around 40 per cent of people are now wearing helmets.
In Hanoi, the People’s Committee has requested that staff at all its branches wear helmets since September.
Many helmet shops in the capital city have been crowded with customers.
For many offices and companies, their leaders signed a contract with helmet suppliers such as Amoro, Hanel or Protect to supply high quality helmets for all staff.
