DHL, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and logistics group, today marked Global Volunteer Day 2013 with 510 staff in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City taking part in school clean up days at Binh My 2 Elementary School in Ho Chi Minh City and Dung Liet Elementary School in northern Bac Ninh province, as part of its global drive to give back to local communities and to inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees.

“DHL in Vietnam is committed to giving back to the community. It is a priority for us here and indeed in all of the markets in which we operate worldwide. This year we will be repairing two schools as we believe that offering an ideal learning environment is key to the ongoing success of Vietnamese children,” DHL-VNPT Express general director Christopher Ong said.

The DHL teams have cleaned, painted the school, WC and playground, leveled the school yard, replaced notice boards and undertaken general maintenance work on both of the schools.

Jan Willem Winkelhuijzen, country manager, DHL Supply Chain said: “This will be my third Volunteer Day in Vietnam, and year in, year out I am struck by the giving spirit of the DHL teams. As an organisation, we believe that people are our greatest resource and the company aims to encourage employees to actively participate in community efforts, as well as inspire the spirit of volunteerism.”

Clement Blanc, Country Manager, DHL Global Forwarding concurred, adding that “Sustainability is an integral part of DHL’s corporate culture and the company’s commitment to deliver to its Corporate Responsibility strategy via its three programmes – GoGreen, GoHelp and GoTeach.”

Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Volunteer Day has expanded into Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees than ever before. In 2012, the initiative was rolled out globally with tremendous success – 62,000 volunteers in about 120 countries and territories participated in more than 1,000 community programmes.

For Global Volunteer Day 2013, Deutsche Post DHL offices around the world are participating in many diverse community projects in support of various local causes.
