US’ Chevron Vietnam, Japan’s Mitsui Oil Exploration Company and Thailand’s PTT Exploration and Production Public Company yesterday announced their collaboration with the National Fund for Vietnamese Children to upgrade school facilities and provide scholarship to underprivileged children in the Mekong Delta this year.

The three energy companies will support the fund’s education programme by upgrading five schools and providing 825 scholarships to children in Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang and Hau Giang provinces and Can Tho city. The total value of the programme is VND3 billion ($150,000).

This is the third consecutive year that the Block B Gas Project partners have supported the National Fund for Vietnamese Children and by the end of this, they will have awarded more than 2,000 scholarships in Vietnam.

“Chevron is pleased to invest in this high-value partnership with the National Fund for Vietnamese Children. Our goal is to build a better future for children in the Mekong Delta by expanding access to education,” said Chevron Vietnam president Hank Tomlinson.

At the signing ceremony of the collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Tomlinson also received an award from the ministry for contributions to the communities in Vietnam made by Chevron Vietnam.

Chevron Vietnam,  Mitsui Oil Exploration Company and PTT Exploration and Production Public Company are working with PetroVietnam and Electricity of Vietnam and other stakeholders on the development of an offshore gas project and transportation pipeline, known as the Block B Gas Project. The companies are also working together to enable the development of new gas-fired power plants that will generate electricity for industries, commercial enterprises and homes in southwest Vietnam.
