The conference was attended by about 500 scientists and physicians from professional associations, universities, and health services units and hospitals across the country and representatives of the ASEAN Medical Associations.
To mark the occasion, Nguyen Hoang Anh, director of the National Drug Information and Adverse Drug Reactions Monitoring Centre, presented at the conference on “Ensuring safety in drug use for the elderly: Updating the Standards Beers 2019 of the American Geriatric Society ”.
According to Hoang Anh, along with the ageing global population, Vietnam currently has about 5.2 million elderly people (above 65 years old).
Multi-pathological and multi-drug conditions with the use of potentially inappropriate prescribtion of drug groups may increase the risk of adverse events when administering drugs to elderly people.

In this context, the American Association of Geriatric Beers updates its list of drugs that should be avoided for the elderly in all cases or for those with certain medical conditions. The goal is to increase the safe use of drugs for the elderly by reducing the use of inappropriate drugs.
This standard can be used as a clinical reference by physicians' prescription choices as well as a tool to assess care quality, cost, and geriatric treatment regimens, and geriatric treatment regimens.
