Potential winning firms enter Annual Report Awards’ final round

The prestigious VIR-backed Annual Report Awards competition has selected 132 listed enterprises to enter the final round.

The enterprises comprise 112 listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) and 20 on the Hanoi Stock Exchange, out of the 598 participating firms.

This year’s number of firms qualifying for the final round is higher than last year’s number (111). To underscore the improvement in submissions, this year’s lowest point tally in the final round was 70, two points higher than that of last year.

This year, judging is based on standards stipulated by Ministry of Finance Circular 52/2012/TT-BTC replacing 09/2010/TT-BTC as guidelines on publishing information in the stock market.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) comprised a number of the 132 qualified firms, which underscored how the contest was raising annual report professionalism, norms and transparency standards, said organisers.

The annual contest, launched in 2008, is co-organised by HoSE and VIR’s sister publication Dau tu Chung khoan, and exclusively sponsored by fund management Dragon Capital Group.

This year’s contest has introduced the Sustainability Reporting Awards for the first time, with the World Bank's IFC and Britain-based global body Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) joining judging.

The Sustainability Reporting Awards cover reports selected best in terms of environmental and social issues.

The new awards came into being to encourage listed companies to publicise information on issues related to the environment and society, as well as to raise awareness of sustainable development issues.

The final round of judging starts mid-June to select the 50 winning annual reports, with the awards ceremony on July 18.

The Annual Report Awards programme has increasingly attracted many investors and listed companies. Between 2008 and 2012, the organisers honoured 129 out of the 1,702 entries, including 299 qualified for the final rounds. The rate of winning reports out of the finalists increased steadily from 13 per cent in 2010 to 17.8 per cent in 2012.
