Entering Vietnam in 1996, shortly after the country normalized diplomatic relations with the United States, after nearly 20 years of operation, Microsoft has made significant contributions to training Vietnam’s IT workforce. Khanh Tran reports.

Two months ago Microsoft announced a $3 million investment in Vietnam as part of its global YouthSpark initiative. The initiative aims to empower underserved young people across Vietnam with opportunities for education, employment, and entrepreneurship through technology skills training, along with connections to employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

“Over the next three years, YouthSpark will help millions of Vietnamese youth access digital resources,” said Vu Minh Tri, General Director of Microsoft Vietnam.

The YouthSpark program, which Microsoft is carrying out in partnership with Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and VietNet Information Technology and Communication Center (VietNet-ICT) and the Kenan Institute Asia, is one of the many programs Microsoft has been rolling out in order to develop the country’s human capital to raise its regional and global competitiveness. Other programs include Microsoft Live @ edu, Microsoft IT Academy, Microsoft DreamSpark, Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance, Imagine Cup and the free of charge provision of Office 365 for 900,000 students so far.

For school pupils, Microsoft’s Partners in Learning (PiL) program, which ran between 2005 and 2013, gave pupils and teachers access the latest IT knowledge and applications in education and teaching. There have been more than 60,000 teachers to participate in Vietnam’s PiL program.

Besides education projects to promote innovation and improve the quality of IT human resources, Microsoft also supports the country’s economic development through programs to build solid IT infrastructure.

As the local leader in "Mobile First, Cloud First" trend, Microsoft has been active in supporting the Government, local authorities and enterprises to build IT infrastructure.

“Microsoft Vietnam Management Board’s prior strategy is to bring new products and solutions to the Vietnamese market. With the cloud, the most important thing is have IT infrastructure ready, thus Microsoft Vietnam always supports partners to develop solid IT infrastructure and assure security, so that businesses enable their staff, customers or users to deploy and optimize the utility and application on a cloud platform,” said Tri.

As Vietnam is an important market for Microsoft in ASEAN with great growth potential, Microsoft has been joining hands with the Vietnamese government to create an IT-based economic stability and growth while contribute to the modernization and development of IT application in Vietnam.
