In response to the severe damage caused by Typhoon Yagi, and following directives from Vietnam Bank for Social Policies' (VBSP) leadership and the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s call for support for those affected, VBSP’s Trade Union has donated VND500 million ($20.8 million).

The contribution aims to help the people in localities severely impacted by the typhoon to recover from the disaster and stabilise their lives quickly.

VBSP has also sent teams to the affected regions to offer condolences and encouragement, and present gifts to those experiencing difficulties due to the storm and flooding.

In Ninh Binh province, about 100km distant from Hanoi, VBSP representatives visited and expressed condolences to the family of Nguyen Dinh Khiem, a 27-year-old senior lieutenant from Brigade 513, based in Military Region 3.

Lieutenant Khiem, from Yen My commune, Yen Mo district, sacrificed his life on September 7, while performing storm prevention duties in Binh Lieu district, Quang Ninh province, one of the localities hit directly by Typhoon Yagi.

VBSP deputy CEO Hoang Minh Te visited Bac Giang province on September 10 to present gifts to six families in Luc Ngan and Son Dong districts that incurred huge losses due to the typhoon.

On September 11, VBSP deputy CEO Nguyen Duc Hai, along with local leaders, offered condolences and presented gifts to families in Hoa Binh that lost relatives.

Among them was the family of 52-year-old Xa Van Xom from Tan Minh commune, Da Bac district, a customer of VBSP.

Xom’s house was destroyed in a landslide early in the morning of September 8. Five people inside the house were buried, and four died, including his wife, daughter, and two grandchildren. Xom survived with injuries.

In Quang Ninh province, located at the epicentre of Typhoon Yagi, with wind intensities ranging from levels 13-14 to 16-17 causing severe destruction, VBSP deputy CEO Le Thi Duc Hanh, along with VBSP Trade Union leaders and local management, visited and presented gifts to families facing hardships also on September 11.

These included households with VBSP loans who incurred heavy property losses in the districts of Tien Yen and Van Don.

According to Vietnam News Agency, as of 7am on September 13, the death toll and number of missing people due to Typhoon Yagi, floods, and landslides has grown to 336. This includes 233 dead and 103 missing.

The northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has been the hardest-hit locality, with 98 dead and 81 missing.
