South Korean firm proposes building solar power plant in southern Vietnamese city

A South Korean firm specializing in renewable energy and hospital management has recently suggested building a solar power plant in southern Vietnam, newswire Vietnamplusreported Wednesday.

The 130MW plant, which will possibly be built by Vetco Vina, a firm owned by investors from South Korea, will cover 50 hectares of land in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho and cost around VND1.2 trillion (US$64 million).

The investors have pledged that the plant will be operated with the most advanced Korean technology, Vietnamplus said.

Speaking at a meeting with the company yesterday, Vo Thi Hong Anh, chairwoman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, emphasized that local authorities always prioritize the research and use of environment-friendly electricity, especially solar energy, to reduce pollution.

The Korean company is required to meet environmental protection standards, apply modern technology, and use the land effectively in order to maximize the plant’s capacity.

The city is among three localities in Vietnam which receive the highest sunlight intensity, according to the Can Tho Department of Planning and Investment.

The proposed plant is expected to provide electricity for the whole southwestern region of Vietnam.

Besides the energy sector, Vetco Vina also plans to cooperate with the southern city in health care and education, the firm’s representative asserted.
