SCG raises awareness of young people to relieve impacts of climate change

SCG, one of the leading conglomerates in ASEAN, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Vietnam cordially announce a design competition named “Sustainable Shelter in an age of Climate Change and Disasters” for Vietnamese undergraduate students in search for top young architect.

This is an effort of SCG and HFH to raise awareness of people, especially young generation about impacts of climate change in Vietnam and encourage students’ creativity in order to make sustainable shelter using SCG’s products with affordable cost to withstand extreme conditions of disasters.  

This competition is for undergraduate students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Van Lang University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education, Ton Duc Thang University, and Can Tho University held from November 2012 to April 2013.

Apart from the pocket money in cash, the first prize winner will get a return trip to Thailand and have a chance to get new experience and learn more from Thailand Architect Fair 2013 as well as being volunteer at least a day at a build site of Habitat for Humanity Thailand. Moreover, the design of first prize winner will be applied in reality to build a livable and safe home for people in affected area of disasters.  

Over the last 20 years, climate changes all over the world have made the weather become harsher. Unpredictable storms and other disasters occurred around the world affected many people’s lives and destroy many communities. Residents in the affected area really need a safe shelter in order to relieve impacts of climate change.

Sattawat Thitaram, country director of SCG Building Materials in Vietnam said: “As a leading building materials manufacturers, SCG has continuously researched to provide building materials which are innovative, environmentally friendly, and suitable to deal with climate changes. We also developed self-declared environmental label “SCG Eco Value” to ensure products and services that have the least negative impact on the environment and offer better quality than others. Be partnership with HFH to execute this competition, we hope to join hands with young people to improve living standard of residents affected from the climate change.”

To help students create the suitable design for sustainable shelter, SCG also introduces the environmentally friendly products namely SCG Roman Tiles - the high-quality fiber-cement craved roof tiles, SCG Smartboard - fiber-cement board for ceiling and wall, and COTTO’s water-saving toilet. And, local sourced materials should be used wherever possible. It will help communities affected from disasters have a pleasant, safe and affordable shelter.

To register, entrants must submit a registration form and send to HFH Vietnam at info@habitatvietnam.org by December 15, 2012 at 5pm and submission of all entries must be made by 5pm on January 31, 2013 at Habitat for Humanity Vietnam (HFH Vietnam) office. The jury will select 10 excellent works for final round in April 2013.
