Yagi made landfall on Vietnam’s northeastern coast earlier in September, leaving the region reeling. With the desire to support those affected by the biggest typhoon to hit Asia this year, many businesses have volunteered to join hands, including Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Corporation, known as SABECO.
Last week, SABECO donated more than $175,000 to support the northern provinces’ recovery after the typhoon. This was carried out in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, local authorities, and its partners.
CEO Lester Tan said, “Our vision of ‘Vietnam Together’ underscores our responsibility to stand with the communities we serve. In times of crisis, we need to provide tangible support. We have suspended events and programmes to focus on delivering essential aid to communities, while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our employees as well as the continuity of our business.”
This highlights the corporation’s human-centric values as well as its commitments to promote sustainable development and wellbeing for Vietnam and its people, Tan added.
SABECO’s initiatives to help those affected by storms comes on the back of other community programmes during Lunar New Year, and through a crisis like the pandemic |
With 44 member companies and more than 12,000 employees in the system, SABECO is committed to ensuring the safety and health of its employees, especially in companies and factories managed by Bia Sai Gon Dong Bac Trading Company and Bia Sai Gon Mien Bac Trading Company, which were directly affected by Typhoon Yagi.
During the period of impact, the board of directors, together with SABECO’s trade union and related departments, worked together to ensure the safety of employees and their families, assessed the condition of facilities and infrastructure, coordinated with local agencies and emergency services, and continued to supply products to businesses in need of reconstruction.
SABECO employees have also showed solidarity towards community relief by participating in an internal donation programme to support employees in affected areas.
The typhoon aftermath comes at a time when the economy was already facing many uncertainties through long-term impacts of issues like the recent pandemic and conflicts, which have created macroeconomic instabilities in many developed countries.
In view of that, over the years, in addition to its business activities, SABECO has actively participated in community projects and sustainable development initiatives to promote positive values for the people and of Vietnam. The company’s commitment goes beyond its core business activities and also demonstrates its deep dedication to the resilience and progress of the nation.
During the 2020 pandemic, SABECO demonstrated its support through initiatives such as “Contribute to a Million Stars”, providing over $130,000 to support 600 small and medium-sized enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City. The “Support Vietnam” scheme also contributed nearly $400,000 to support more than 200 hospitals and frontline forces against the pandemic. In addition, the SABECO Cares programme was launched to protect the health and safety of employees.
Since 2020, the company has contributed nearly $1 billion to support workers across all localities, helping them have a meaningful Lunar New Year holiday, in the face of economic challenges and uncertainties. SABECO’s continuous efforts highlight the company’s role as a trusted partner in Vietnam’s development.
In its business strategy towards sustainable development, CEO Tan explained that people are one of the key pillars for the development of the enterprise. “The human factor is also identified as one of the important pillars to help SABECO improve its competitiveness and maintain its position after it began a full transformation process in 2019,” Tan said.
Despite the difficulties caused by economic fluctuations in recent years, SABECO has maintained jobs for more than 12,000 direct workers in the entire ecosystem and many indirect workers in the service and support industries in the same supply chain.
Tan believes that employees are an important factor in the sustainable development process. “We will continue to invest in people to enhance our internal strength and competitiveness, creating sustainable value for shareholders, users, and the community,” added Tan.
SABECO’s four pillars of consumption, conservation, country, and culture reflect important aspects, from promoting responsible consumption and protecting the environment to contributing to the national socioeconomic development, and honouring and maintaining the traditional Vietnamese culture.
These are key factors that help SABECO not only develop its business but also contribute to the sustainable development of the community and the country as a whole.
