Do Huu Hao, chairman of Vietnam Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Association, speaking at the launching ceremony |
The launch attracted representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), departments of Industry and Trade, and more than 60 local industrial companies.
The award is part the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (4E) Project implemented by the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development of MoIT and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The award will be running from November 20, 2017 until the end of January 2018.
All industrial enterprises operating in the country and having an annual energy consumption from 300TOE per year (equal to two million kWh per year) and having carried out energy efficiency solutions from 2011 to 2016 are eligible to apply.
“The objective of the award is to provide recognition to local industrial companies that have outstanding results in saving energy and promote successful energy efficiency solutions. It also aims at raising awareness on energy efficiency among the business communities across the country,” said Do Huu Hao, chairman of the Vietnam Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency Association (VECEA) cum head of the Organising Board.
“Knowing about and reproducing good initiatives on energy efficiency by fellow companies can be a very good way for an enterprise to save energy easily. The award is a timely and meaningful initiative, as it connects companies and empowers them to improve energy efficiency by sharing and learning from each other,” said Sonia Lioret, head of GIZ’s 4E Project at the launching ceremony.
In her words, industrial consumption represents 47 per cent of the total energy consumption in Vietnam. Saving energy in the industry, therefore, should be a high priority not only to reduce energy costs but also for companies to stay competitive.
As part of the awards, national winners will be defined in two categories, including Best energy efficiency solutions, Original and Innovation energy efficiency solutions, and New and renewable energy-related solutions.
The winners, slated to be announced at the end of January 2018, will receive certificates from the Ministry of Industry and Trade as well as VECEA.
They will also be featured on MoIT’s website http://Tietkiemnangluong.com.vn, on local media and national television channels, besides having the chance to meet and exchange with leading energy experts in Vietnam.
As one of the most dynamically growing economies in Asia, Vietnam faces an enormous increase in energy demand that will continue to grow at double-digit rates in the coming years.
With regards to energy consumption, industry, transportation, and residential areas are the three biggest electricity consuming sectors, which account for 47, 15, and 30 per cent, respectively.
The Vietnamese government is strongly committed to increasing energy efficiency. In 2010, the introduction of Law No.50/2010/QH12 followed by Decree No.21/2011/ND-CP outlined the major policies and measures to encourage the economical and efficient utilisation of energy.
In 2016, in the revised Power Development Plan VII, the government has set a national target on energy efficiency. In particular, up to 10 per cent of total electricity consumption will be saved during 2016-2020.
