The forecast was made by the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) after analysing the balance of Vietnam ’s gas supply and demand during the 2011-2015 period.
The statistics showed that in the reviewed period the country will be short of 1.4 billion cubic metres of gas, an equivalent to one million tonnes of LNG.
Currently, PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV Gas) is investing $500 million in a project on LNG import.
The corporation is preparing for the construction and operation of a warehouse, which will receive and distribute LNG at Thi Vai port, in the southern province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau.
With an annual capacity of one million tonnes of LNG, the warehouse is scheduled to be put into operation in 2013.
PV Gas is also selecting sites to build more LNG storage facilities with an annual capacity of three million tonnes by 2015.
