Toshiba Corp funds future scholars in Vietnam

Japanese engineering and electronics conglomerate Toshiba Corporation last week announced its continued commitment to granting scholarships at the Vietnam National University Hanoi and Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, with the aim of offering eligible individuals access to quality third-level education.

Recognising the benefits of continuous education in science and technology – areas in which Vietnam is pursuing high growth policies – Toshiba has promised to provide each university with JPY1.6 million ($13,300) per year.

Toshiba has supported the programme since 2005. Since then, over 400 scholarships have been awarded to grateful recipients. Selected post-graduate students will each receive an annual scholarship, which can be used for tuition fees and to offset living expenses.

In addition to providing scholarships, in 2007, Toshiba established a technology laboratory for embedded software and systems in the College of Technology (Coltech) at the Vietnam National University Hanoi (VNU Hanoi). Meanwhile, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, which is another recipient of Toshiba’s scholarships, receives support for its nuclear power course.

Naoto Nishida, corporate executive vice president of the Toshiba Corporation, said that “Toshiba believes that education is very important in nurturing the next generation and future leaders of Vietnam. Vietnam already houses many of Toshiba’s various businesses, and we are seeking to expand even further here. Toshiba appreciates the people in Vietnam who drive our successes.”

As Vietnam’s government has called for a focused effort on developing the two national universities into leading tertiary institutions, Toshiba has responded with a firm dedication to nurturing Vietnam’s future generation.
