Improving productivity, reducing production costs and minimising negative impacts on the environment by large and medium-sized manufacturers are some of the topics discussed in the “Energy Efficiency Programme of Supply Chain” workshop held by Metro Cash & Carry and GIZ’s Project Development Programme (PDP) on Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City.

Some 80 participants representing enterprises in Metro’s supply chain, businesses, energy experts joined this event.

“With an increasing trend of electricity prices in Vietnam and stricter national requirements on energy consumption, Vietnamese manufacturers should consider and evaluate their energy management system to remain competitive and develop sustainably,” Erik Heens, operations director, Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam addressed the workshop.

“Effective energy and resource management is one of the sustainability goals that we have been pursuing,” he added. “We would like to share our experiences in energy efficiency management and wish to support enterprises in our supply chain to operate more efficiently.”

At the workshop GIZ’s energy experts presented the latest legal framework updates and typical examples of energy management system development and adoption in Vietnam. The experts and participants also discussed how to achieve energy efficiency in the suppliers’ factories in the near future.

Tobias Cossen, GIZ/PDP project manager, underlined that the enterprises in Metro’s supply chain were of medium and larger sizes. If these companies have adequate knowledge in energy management and could make use of advanced technologies, the economic and environmental impacts will be positive.

To help businesses better understand energy efficiency in production, GIZ experts conducted free energy audits for several suppliers before the workshop. Following the energy audits, the experts analysed and advised businesses of optimal alternatives for energy consumption.

“We have collaborated with Metro Cash&Carry Vietnam to support Vietnamese enterprises not only to have better awareness on energy efficiency but also to show and tap the potentials for energy efficiency through establishing an energy efficiency network,” said Cossen.
