Market ends 2011 on a calm note

Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange’s (HoSE) VN-Index added 1.04 points or 0.3 per cent to 351.55 points. Hanoi Stock Exchange’s (HNX) HNX-Index advanced 1.13 points or 1.96 per cent to 58.74 points.

The market rallied with most the stocks climbing. Up to 184 stocks gained on the HoSE, including 79 hitting the ceiling. Decliners strongly reduced to 78 stocks. Meanwhile, HNX saw 179 stocks up, compared with 74 off.

Investors seemed to calm down from the bailing-out trend in previous sessions. Bid orders increased at the session’s ending period, pushing up a number of major stocks like Song Da Urban & Industrial Zone Investment and Development (SJS), Hoang Anh GIa Lai (HAG), Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI).

On the HNX, investors’ favorite stocks like VNDirect Securities (VND), Kim Long Securities (KLX), Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Group (VCG), PetroVietnam Construction (PVX) strongly jumped.

Particularly, securities company shares largely rallied with Saigon-Hanoi Securities (SHS), Bao Viet Securities (BVS), Golden Bridge Vietnam Securities (GBS) strongly climbing. However, stocks of bad-performed brokerages like SME Securities (SME), Orient Securities (ORS) were strongly bailed out.

Other large-cap stocks saw just modest gains. Masan Group (MSN) and Vincom Corp. (VIC) were up less than 1 per cent, SSI slightly added while Eximbank (EIB) and Sacombank (STB) ended flat.

Vinamilk (VNM), Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), Kinhbac City Development Share Holding Corp. (KBC) ended off.

Liquidity significantly improved to 56 million shares worth VND808 billion ($39.1 million) on HoSE. Put-through transaction was still exciting with up to 29.7 million shares worth VND442 billion ($21.4 million) negotiated, focusing on STB, Quoc Cuong Gia Lai (QCG), Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corp. (REE).

HNX’s total volume also advanced to 34.9 million shares, worth VND283.7 billion ($13.7 million).

Overall, VN-Index lost 27.46 per cent during 2011, while the HNX-Index was off 48.6 per cent.
