The award ceremony was attended by youths from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, all of which will qualify for the Global KWN Contest next year.
Vietnam received the award for the Best Script with their entry, “1 New Message”, portraying the dire consequences of a future with complete reliance on text messaging and a void of face-to-face personal communication. The video reflects today’s age of digitisation and mobilisation.
The Kid Witness News is a long-running hands-on video education programme established by Panasonic in the US in 1989, while the international and regional categories were created in 2004. This year, elementary and secondary school students are challenged on their creativity and communication skills through video production based on the theme of communications or environment. Panasonic supports the students through providing them with professional video equipment and hands on training workshops on the equipment.
This year’s competition received more than 1,900 entries from around the region and seven were chosen to represent their respective countries.
“The programme this year saw many creative ideas from the students and I believe they definitely learnt a lot from it,” said Naoki Sugiura, director for Planning & Brand Promotion for Panasonic Vietnam.
“It is inspiring to see these young children being able to identify real pressing environmental and societal issues and creating professional quality videos to talk about them.”
