In anticipation, Visal Leng, region general manager of GE Oil & Gas Asia Pacific, spoke with VIR’s Linh Mai the about firm’s strategy for recruitment in Vietnam.
GE Oil & Gas has had a local presence for years, but this is first time for the company to display advanced technologies to local engineers like this. So what are the highlights of your technology advances compared to other competitors and what do you hope to accomplish in this event?
GE Oil & Gas has a long-term commitment to Vietnam. We invest not only in infrastructure capabilities but also in developing local engineering talent through skills training and knowledge transfer.
GE Oil & Gas has a strong local presence in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City for turbo-machinery and drilling and production equipment and services support. In partnership with PetroVietnam, we have also provided advanced technology equipment and services to several high-profile projects in Vietnam such as the Bien Dong HPHT project.
On knowledge sharing, this is not the first time we bring technology updates to local engineers. Last October, GE Oil & Gas organised a technology workshop in Ho Chi Minh City covering broad topics on drilling and production systems, turbo-machinery as well as measurement and control. For this event, we will showcase our advanced innovative solutions for those in management, engineering and commercial teams in the oil and gas industry.
We want to create an open platform for the sharing expertise, experience as well as ideas on how to meet challenges on the job and planning for career and professional growth.
During his last visit to Vietnam, GE vice chairman John G. Rice announced the establishment of GE Engineering Centre in Ho Chi Minh City to build up the local capability and improve the capacity for local customers. Could you tell us about the role of GE Oil & Gas in this project?
The Vietnam Engineering Centre (VEC) is targeted to open in late 2013. This is a critical step in furthering our commitment to the economic growth of Vietnam. The main focus of this centre will be product design, applications and services for the oil and gas sector in Vietnam and the region. This establishment of VEC underscores GE’s commitment to bring our broad range of infrastructure capabilities to Vietnam in a company to country partnership.
We recognise and support the development of young engineering talent as Vietnam’s national priority to accelerate the country’s economic growth. As the first business unit working actively for VEC, GE Oil & Gas aims to provide high quality jobs in a region known for its professional workforce. We expect to recruit up to 200 highly qualified local engineers in the coming years.
They will be given opportunities to learn, develop and build fulfilling careers with GE.
It seems that your company is launching a big country-wide recruiting campaign. What are criteria to become a part of GE’s family?
GE Oil & Gas is looking for ambitious individuals who possess excellent business acumen, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and good analytical problem solving abilities.
We are looking for people with technical aptitude who are eager to learn, and keen to develop professionally and personally. They should be able to work effectively in a team and also have good English communication skills.
