The store in Beijing may be followed by another in the capital and several more in other Chinese cities if the group can find the right top class locations, Galeries Lafayette executive Paul Delaoutre said in a statement.
The 18,000-square-metre (21,500-square-yard) Beijing store will be the second biggest of the group's shops after its flagship outlet on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris.
Galeries Lafayette, which last year saw turnover of 2.5 billion euros ($3.4 billion), has 61 stores in France, and is also present in Germany and Dubai.
