Hong Kong’s Ever Glory Vietnam Garment has expressed the interest in purchasing northern Hai Duong province-based Lai Vu Industrial Zone worth $30 million.

According to Hai Duong Provincial Industrial Zones Management Authority deputy manager Nguyen Huy Dong, the firm, which is the developer of the province-based Nam Sach Industrial Zone (IZ),  is negotiating to purchase Lai Vu from the state-run PetroVietnam, the current IZ developer.

Ever Glory Vietnam, established in 2003, is a Vietnamese branch of Everglory Garment, one of the leading knitwear manufacturers in Hong Kong.

Lai Vu IZ, covering 212.89 hectares, is located near the northern economic region’s key triangle Hanoi-Haiphong-Quang Ninh.

At first, Lai Vu IZ was invested by the state-run Vinashin Group. In June 2010, Lai Vu was handed over to PetroVietnam. However, it is one of PetroVietnam’s divestment projects in line with the group’s restructuring plans.

A total of 14 companies with 11 Vinashin subsidiaries were registered to set up manufacturing facilities in Lai Vu IZ. But, none are operational and the zone has been left deserted while Lai Vu farmers are cultivating  sweet potatoes, peanuts and bananas on the site.

Lai Vu IZ, aiming to specialise in shipbuilding industry, once promised to offer  10,000 jobs for local workers when it went into operation.
