A total of 753,709 new cars were registered in the European Union last month, up 7.7 per cent from August 2010, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
Car sales had fallen by 2.0 per cent in July and 8.1 per cent in June.
In the biggest markets, sales rose in August by 18.3 per cent in Germany, 7.3 per cent in Britain, 5.9 per cent in Spain, 3.1 per cent in France and 1.5 per cent in Italy.
In the first eight months of the year, a total of 8,888,793 new cars were registered in the EU, excluding Malta and Cyprus, a drop of 1.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.
