The last time the ECB bought public debt was during the week ending January 22, when it spent 146 million euros on bonds.

The total amount of debt purchased since the ECB programme began in May has thus risen to around 77 billion euros, an ECB statement said.

The central bank is believed to have purchased Portuguese debt for the most part last week.

It takes in an equivalent amount in one-week deposits to ensure the action does not fuel inflation.
