Cam Ranh terminal starts test runs next year

The construction of the international terminal at Cam Ranh International Airport in the central province of Khanh Hoa is accelerated in order to start test operations in April 2018.

To date, the developer has completed 50 per cent of the first phase’s workload.

Phan Le Hoan, general director of Cam Ranh International Terminal JSC, told Bnews that the company has urged contractors to accelerate the construction process, aiming to finish by March 2018 and put the terminal into test operation in April.

The construction, which was kicked-off in September 2016, has a total investment capital of VND3.73 trillion ($164.1 million), 80 per cent of which are loans from banks. Once completed, the terminal will have a designed annual capacity of 8 million passengers by 2030, with a maximum of 4,000 passengers at peak season.

According to the initial plans, construction is carried out in three stages. The first phase is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018, enabling the terminal to greet 2.5 million passengers annually, however, unfavorable weather conditions have put the project behind schedule.

In March 2015, Khanh Hoa pumped over VND1.9 trillion ($85.5 million) into building the second taxiway at Cam Ranh airport.

Cam Ranh airport was built by the US troops to serve military missions during wartime and was converted into a civil airport in 2004. It was upgraded to an international airport in 2009.

In the first six months of this year, the airport has been continuously overloaded by passengers. Notably, it received approximately 3 million passengers, up 31 per cent on-year, while its designed annual capacity as of the end of 2016 was 2.5 million passengers.
