On August 30, global healthcare company Abbott announced the acquisition of Glomed Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. (Glomed), a leading Vietnamese pharmaceutical manufacturer.

According to Ngo Van Huy, general manager of Abbott’s Established Pharmaceuticals Business, this acquisition will further strengthen the company’s ability to serve patients in Vietnam with innovative, high-quality healthcare solutions that allow them to live a healthier life and reach their full potential.

“Abbott intends to build on Glomed’s success to ensure long-term growth in Vietnam,” Huy said.

He added that while Glomed’s production facilities already operate at Vietnamese Goods Manufacturing Practice standards, Abbott intends to enlist valuable expertise to expand Glomed’s capabilities in the future, based on detailed assessments that will take place in the coming months.

In addition, Abbott will further strengthen its core businesses lines in the key regions of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Can Tho, and Dong Nai.

Through this acquisition, Abbott became one of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in Vietnam, with two manufacturing facilities (both in Binh Duong Province), further reinforcing its position and commitment to the market and the local populace.

Furthermore, Abbott obtained a portfolio of medicines that is well-aligned with their current pharmaceutical therapeutic areas of focus, namely anti-infective medicines, gastroenterology, cardiovascular diseases, pain management, respiratory and women’s health, as well as over-the-counter (OTC) products.

Abbott has been present in Vietnam for more than 20 years, a proof of its long-term commitment to growing global healthcare markets and capabilities.

With two manufacturing sites in the southern province of Binh Duong and five commercial branches across Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, Nha Trang, and Can Tho), Glomed has more than 100 products in its portfolio and employs 845 employees.

In Vietnam, Abbott and the Abbott Fund have provided almost VND230 billion ($10.2 million) in grants and product donations to address critical health issues through partnerships focused on improving nutrition, training health care staff, strengthening health systems, and expanding community education.
