The Candle Ritual is performed in Sofitel Luxury Hotels around the world and gets its inspiration from the age-old tradition of lighting the streets of Paris. General Police of Paris Gabriel Nicolas de la Reynie made it his mission in 1667 to clean and secure the streets of Paris. He implemented a public lighting system where men lit up the streets after the sun had set each day to ensure public safety. Paris was later called Ville Lumière or City of Light because of this.

From the ancient practice, Sofitel has appropriated the practical ritual and turned it into a dramatic homage to the passage of day into night which can be witnessed by the hotel guests.
