The Lang – Hoa Lac expressway in Hanoi opened to traffic on October 3, and was officially renamed ‘Thang Long Avenue.’

PM Dung and leaders cut a ribbon to open to traffic the avenue.

This is a main traffic project selected by the National Steering Committee for the Millennial Anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi to celebrate the city’s 1000th anniversary.

It is the longest and most modern avenue in Vietnam with a length of over 29 kilometres and runs from the Trung Hoa - Ring Road No. 3 intersection to the Hoa Lac intersection with Highway No.21.

The expressway which is 140 metres wide, has six lanes for vehicles and also includes 51 concrete bridges spanning rivers or passing over roads. The project’s total investment reaches nearly VND 7.6 trillion (US$401 million).

Thang Long Avenue is the first urban expressway designed and built entirely by local experts and contractors.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed that the avenue is of strategic significance to the development of the eastern part of Hanoi as it links the Ho Chi Minh Highway with the capital city and its surrounding provinces.

It will facilitate the development of the Lang-Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park, a major project which will make a positive impact on the country’s economic development.

He added that the expressway also plays an important role in expanding the capital city to the west and southwest, thus creating a modern and civilised capital.
