The visit, held by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was aimed at studying local current socio-economic development and plans for the next 5-10 years, as well as challenges to the development of the province and the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC).
Le Huu Thang, Deputy Chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee reported that between 1997-2009, ADB financed 19 projects in Quang Tri, with a combined capital of $114.3 million.
In 2010, ADB provided VND939 billion ($44.7 million) to seven projects in the province.
Thang also provided a briefing on the province’s development of the EWEC.
Thai Ambassador to Vietnam , Anuson Chivanno said the EWEC played an important role for Thailand and his country would continue to cooperate with related countries to boost the development of the corridor.
Meanwhile, ADB country Director Ayuni Konishi said that Quang Tri was one of the most active cities or provinces in boosting the development of EWEC. However, he said the EWEC had not been developed as expected, but only as a transport route.
He pointed out that the challenge was to turn the transport corridor into an economic corridor, connecting with other activities.
While in Quang Tri, the mission visited some ADB-funded projects, the Lao Bao International Border Gate and the Densavan border gate of Laos.
